Can Too Much Exercise and Training Damage You?

too much exerciseI’ve always believed in moderation. I think extremists lose perspective and sway one way or the other. For the most part exercise is extremely helpful and necessary for all of us, but there are once again extremes that can damage and harm you. I would safely say that almost all people can find the right dosage of exercise and benefit from an appropriate application of exercise and movement.  In fact, if you can commit to 5 hours of exercise a week you will be fit, healthy, and lean. If you don’t have the body you’ve always wanted and you’re working out 5 hours a week you need help. You don’t need to spend more than an hour working out daily.

James O’Keefe is a research cardiologist and an endurance athlete. At this Ted conference Dr. O’Keefe shares very insightful data that might make you reevaluate your exercise routines. More is not necessarily better. You might be overdoing it and not actually know the damage your doing to your body and future. Finding your balance is key as I’m sure we all are concerned about our quality of life in the future especially if you’re taking the time to read this blog and watch this video. Please take the time to watch the entire video as you will find the information current, informative, and hopefully relevant to your lifestyle.

How fast do you run your miles? How many miles do you cover in a week? Do you cross train and mix up your movements and exercise? I find that most runners just run because they love it and definitely get a “runners high” from their chosen form of activity. The useful application of the studies and information in Dr. O’Keefe’s presentation is you can still run and make the most of your favorite activity. Everyone has a passion for something and I would never want to dismantle someone’s passion. Just be smart about how you apply your running and have fun. Movement and exercise is all about enjoying what you do, otherwise you would never do it, right?

If you aren’t a regular exerciser or just want to find the right amount of exercise most beneficial for you please contact us. You have so many choices to get in better shape and honestly find something that you love. I do realize not everyone likes to exercise but I would argue that you need to look at exercise more like “play time.” It doesn’t have to be boring and it shouldn’t be boring. Personally, I always found long-distance running was boring. Yet, look at how many people thrive on it! The main point is to find and go after what you really enjoy. Create your fine balance while hopefully extending your life and living present and alive each day. You have choices…make a good one! Free Fitness Coaching
