It happens to you almost every day. Somewhere around 1pm through 4:30pm., the post-lunchtime woes tend to strike. When they do, energy wanes, perceived hunger rises and the need for a snack or pick me upper becomes evident, right?
Sadly, many people rush for the sugar or caffeine to help pick them up when the lows strike, sacrificing their health in the process. While an occasional sweet snack or caffeinated beverage is acceptable, the reality is there are much better choices for your body – and your energy level – that you should consider on a daily basis.
If you want to try one of the best, just go nuts! There are a number of great choices including: almonds, walnuts, cashews, brazil nuts, pecans and pistachios.
Before heading out the door for work or other engagements just grab a baggie and pack it up with your favorite nuts and toss in a few raisins for good measure if you like. If you must, a pinch of chocolate or carob chips can be included for an extra dose of sweet.
When selecting your nuts, just go with what you love the best. Choices like almonds, walnuts, pecans, pistachios, and so on are all excellent afternoon snack choices for very good reasons. Here’s why:
-
- They pack in a lot of energy – Nuts provide just the right amount of calories to combat those afternoon munchies without causing another pre-dinner lull. The good fats in nuts should be very satisfying.
-
- They’re loaded with nutrients – Nuts tend to be wonderful courses of protein, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. Plus, many nuts are high in omega-3 fatty acids, which your body needs to stay healthy. Just don’t overeat or consume too many nuts.
-
- They’re crunchy and fun to eat – Nuts are a great substitute for salty, empty-calories snacks like potato chips. If you have to have the “sweet” too, just add in those raisins for good measure or about 5-10 chocolate chips. Ideally you want to go for raw nuts first or dry roasted. You don’t want extra oils and hydrogenated processes.
- They are easily portable – Nuts don’t have to be refrigerated to stay good. That means you can toss your own snack mix into a baggie and go without any worries. I carry some in my pack all the time. I can’t tell you how many times I have been hungry with no time to eat a good meal. Yet, the nuts and seeds satisfy me until I have time to eat a real meal.
Eating healthy doesn’t have to be boring. If you’re worried about those afternoon munchies, just consider replacing typical, unhealthy snacks with a nuttier alternative. Your body will thank you if you do with plenty of energy along with a nice lean look!
Snack time isn’t the only time to keep health in mind either. Nuts make a great addition to many meals. If you’re working to lose weight or increase your fitness level, consider dishes that you can introduce nuts into for extra energy just find a good balance.
